POE lubricants are actually created by reacting an alcohol with an acid. Although the total acid numbers are higher than in comparable mineral oils, the chemical make-up of POE lubricants keeps this number relatively low. However, this lubricant can break down into its acid and alcohol componentseither from excessive heat such as a motor burn-out or high discharge temperatures, or with excessive system moisture. This acid can cause damage to a system and may eventually cause the system to fail prematurely. It is important that such a condition bediagnosed early and that system be cleaned up according to proper industry procedures.
