LEGO Education Robotics Training Mat – Size: 139 x 100cm
This MTA Robotics Training Mat is a great resource to get started with the NXT Base Set and EV3 Core Set. A wide range of activities can be performed with this mat. This mat has been developed to allow for open ended activities that can be designed by the teacher or the students. It can be used as a testing mat or challenge area.Following are a suggested list of activities that can be used with the Training Mat.
Introductory Robot Sumo
A Sumo ring is traditionally a raised circular ring but the oval outline is suitable to allow students to prepare for a competition.
Robot Sumo Challenge
The challenge is where two robots attempt to push each other out of the oval while staying upright and inside the area themselves.
There are a variety of programs that can be used but students should start with a light sensor and add the ultrasonic sensor as their skill increases.
Objects can also be placed inside the black line if a second robot is not available. This allows for practice in pushing objects out of the oval.
Line Follower Challenge
The black line can be used as a starting point for introducing line following programs. There are several ways a robot can follow a black line the most basic being an edge following using one sensor For extension an additional light sensor is required for a two light sensor program.
There are many additions that can be made to the one and two light sensor line following programs to make it more challenging.
Chicken in an Egg – a perfect Easter activity
Cover a small section with masking tape for the exit. This challenge is for the egg to hatch as fast as possible ie the robot is the chicken about to hatch. Start the robot facing the opposite direction to the exit and stay in the oval/egg for at least 10 seconds and then hatch/exit as fast as possible.
Students could decorate their robots as chickens.
